This cruise report covers scientific operations conducted during RRS Discovery Cruise D359. Cruise D359 departed from São Antonio, Cape Verde on Friday 17th December 2010 arriving Santa Cruz de Tenerife Friday 14th December 2011.The purpose of the cruise was the refurbishment of an array of moorings on the mid-Atlantic Ridge and off the Moroccan Coast at a nominal latitude of 26.5°N. The moorings are part of a purposeful Atlantic wide mooring array for monitoring the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and Heat Flux. The array is a joint UK/US programme and is known as the RAPID-?WATCH/MOCHA array. Information and data from the project can be found on the web site hosted by the National Oceanography Centre Southampton http://www.noc.soton.ac.uk/rapidmoc and also from the British Oceanographic Data Centre http://www.bodc.ac.uk.The RAPID transatlantic array consists of 24 moorings of which 21 are maintained by the UK, and 20 bottom landers of which 16 are maintained by the UK. The moorings are primarily instrumented with self logging instruments measuring conductivity, temperature and pressure. Direct measurements of currents are made in the shallow and deep western boundary currents. The bottom landers are instrumented with bottom pressure recorders (also known as tide gauges), measuring the weight of water above the instrument. The RAPID naming convention for moorings is Western Boundary (WB), Eastern Boundary (EB) and Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) indicating the general sub-regions of the array. Numbering increments from west to east. An L in the name indicates a bottom lander, M indicates a mini-mooring with only one instrument, H indicates a mooring on the continental slope. During D359 we recovered: MAR0, MAR1L4, MAR1, MAR2, MAR3, MAR3L4, EB1, EB1L7, EBHi, EBH1, EBH1L7, EBH2, EBH3, EBH4, EBP2, EBH5, EBM5. We did not recover EBM1, EBM4, EBM6, EBH1 and MAR3. We deployed: MAR0, MAR1L7, MAR1, MAR2, MAR3, MAR3L6, EB1, EB1L7, EBHi, EBH1, EBH1L8, EBH2, EBH3, EBH4, EBP2, EBH5. A sediment trap mooring NOGST was also recovered and redeployed for the Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems Group at the NOCS.CTD stations were conducted at convenient times throughout the cruise for purposes of providing pre and post deployment calibrations for mooring instrumentation and for testing mooring releases prior to deployment.Shipboard underway measurements were systematically logged, processed and calibrated, including: waves (spectra of energy and significant wave height), surface meteorology (air pressure, temperature, wind speed and direction and radiation (total incident and photosynthetically active), 6m-depth sea temperatures and salinities, water depth, navigation (differential GPS measurements feeding two independent and different receivers, heading, pitch and roll from a four antenna Ashtec ADU5 receiver, gyro heading and ships speed relative to the water using an electro-magnetic log). Water velocity profiles from 15m to approximately 500m depth were obtained using a ship mounted 75 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler. Sea-water samples from CTD stations and of the sea-surface were obtained for calibration and analysed on a salinometer referencing these samples against standard sea water. For velocity data (wind and currents) measured relative to the ship considerable effort was made to obtain the best possible earth-referenced velocities.Four APEX argo floats supplied by the Met Office were deployed at pre-assigned locations, filling gaps in the network

Public health risks from illegally imported African bushmeat and smoked fish

    Get PDF
Large-scale importation of bushmeat from West and Central Africa into Europe was reported in 2010. We sampled 18 illegal African bushmeat consignments seized at Charles de Gaulle airport, Paris, France and tested for the presence of bacteria. Additionally, five smuggled smoked fish were analysed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are known carcinogens. All bushmeat samples had viable counts of aerobic bacteria above levels considered safe for human consumption. We also identified zoonotic bacterial pathogens in bushmeat and unsafe levels of carcinogens in fish. The illegal importation of meat is a potential risk for the introduction of pathogens

This paper discusses optionsfor tracking academic reading material and introduces a personal digital library solution. We combined and extended the open source projects Zotero and Greenstone such that material can be easily downloaded and ingested into the combined system. Our prototype system has been explored in a small user study

A Facial Congenital Anomaly in a Mature Male White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus)

    Get PDF
Congenital anomalies are rarely documented in wild ungulates. This study describes a congenital facial malformation in a mature male white-tailed deer harvested in central Georgia in 2020. The skull displays a mediolateral deflection of the rostrum, and the mandibles display similar deflection with posterior rotation at the mandibular symphysis, a maxillofacial malformation commonly called wry face. Based on physical examination and radiographic imagery, there were no signs of neoplasia or healed bone trauma on the skull or jaws, suggesting a congenital origin for the deformity. Studies of domestic horses displaying wry face conclude that the malformation arises from fetal mispositioning within the uterus during late term pregnancy. Lacking contrasting evidence, fetal mispositioning is a plausible cause for the anomaly documented here. It is likely that such anomalies in wild ungulates are rarely documented due to reduced survivability of afflicted neonates

Business education and the development of feedback skills: The impact of student peer review assignments.

    Get PDF
Business education not only strives to bridge the gap between related theories and applications but also seeks to develop student’s employability skills. Employability skills are generic skill sets of employees and potential employees that employers across industries value. Leadership, communications, and relationship building are examples of skills that employers have reported as valuable employability skills. Feedback receiving and giving are communications skills important for employment and professional development. The purpose of this paper is to explore the pedagogical device of peer reviews in business classes to develop students’ feedback receiving and feedback giving skills. Using the theoretical learning theory, connectivisim, we propose that course-related peer-review assignments due to their collaborative nature improve feedback skills. From the literature, we developed a conceptual model related to collaborative coursework such as peer review assignments in business courses. We also present some best practices for leveraging course-specific peer-review assignments to enhance students’ feedback skills

CFRP Strengthening of Steel Beams with Web Openings

    Get PDF
Integration of services via web-openings in steel floor beams is often unavoidable in modern frame buildings. Such web-openings can significantly reduce the shear and bending strength capacity of the beams. Traditionally, the welding of additional steel plates to the opening areas is adopted as a means of strengthening and stiffening. This not only presents practical difficulties but can induce residual stresses which weaken fatigue performance of the section. This study explores the use of externally bonded carbon fibre reinforced polymer composites (CFRP) as an alternative means of strengthening. Using a non-linear finite element approach, the effect of strengthening arrangement is investigated with a view to finding the most structurally efficient layout. For the series studied significant enhancements of strength comparable to those achieved by welded plates, have been predicted

Predators persecuted in the Asir Region, South-western Saudi Arabia.

Predators are never popular in rural farming areas where they are viewed as actual or potential stock raiders and consequently actively persecuted where encountered. As a result of this human- predator conflict numbers of especially the bigger predators such as leopard, wolf and hyena have declined dramatically throughout their natural range in Saudi Arabia. Globally Wolves (Canis lupus) are classified as Least Concern (Mech & Boitani 2008) while striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) is classified as Near Threatened (Arumugam, Wagner & Mills 2008) by the IUCN. According to Mech & Boitani (2004) 500 to 600 Arabian wolves (C. l. pallipes Sykes 1831) are estimated from the Arabian Peninsula while Nader (1996) views wolves with more or less stable populations in Saudi Arabia although still considered rare. Striped hyena, with populations estimated between 300 to 400 animals, is steadily declining in Saudi Arabia (Nader 1996) and expected at lower densities than wolves

Effect of social media in improving knowledge among patients having fixed appliance orthodontic treatment: A single-center randomized controlled trial

    Get PDF
Research has shown that orthodontic patients are more likely to retain information presented in an audiovisual format. However, there has been little research on the effectiveness of audiovisual information provided through different routes such as the Internet. This parallel-group randomized controlled trial assessed whether provision of audiovisual information on the YouTube (Google, San Bruno, Calif) Web site to orthodontic patients undergoing fixed appliance treatment results in improved patient knowledge when compared with conventional methods of information provision. The effects of sex and ethnicity were also investigated
